I gather I'm not the only one with a problem trying to run Microsoft Outlook with the Windows Vista operating system. What I'd like to know is, does anyone have a fix?

The problem seems to arise form the fact that I have two e-mail addresses, each with their own POP and SMTP servers. Naturally I need separate Outlook accounts for the two addresses to receive the incoming POP mail but, as one SMTP server seems to be better than the other, I wast to use just one SMTP server for both addresses.

This worked OK under Windows XP, but in Vista I get asked for the usernames and passwords individually each time I open Outlook, and then to confirm Administrator permission for each one. This is despite the fact that I'd asked the OS to remember the username/password each time - which it does - but seems incapable of "clicking its own OK button".

Can anyone help me to set up the Outlook accounts, and any other Outlook settings, to get it to work as effortlessly under Vista as it did under XP?

First of all, what version of Outlook are you running?

It seems likely that it's Outlook 2002 or earlier, since there's a known problem with Outlook 2002 on Vista that sounds similar to your problem. Unfortunately, there isn't a fix - Outlook 2002 is no longer fully supported by Microsoft.

If it's your home machine, I would recommend upgrading to Office 2007, which is £60 at Amazon. If it's a work PC, then Office licences are still big money - I'd recommend moving to Windows Mail, which is the free, built in email program in Vista. It doesn't handle contact management / calendar / tasks nearly as well (at all?) as Outlook, however.

Hi Chris

Thanks for your reply.

I'll check the Outlook version on Tuesday. Maybe have to change to Windows Mail.

All the best,

David

David, in adding to Chris' suggestion, I have a similar setup as yours (Vista, Office 2007) and have happily run multiple incoming/outgoing servers (I have additionally disabled the User Account Control to avoid administrator approvals) . Happy to compare settings with you if all else fails.

Problem now solved, or rather worked around, by switching to Windows Mail.

Thanks for all suggestions.

Just to correct myself: Office 2007 Home and Student Edition doesn't include Outlook. Duh.
